Whats On
An 'Americas Evening'
Date:
We are very excited about the next concert which will be a break away for the choral society from the traditional Latin Mass offerings. We are going folk! (and it is beautiful).
Generally regarded as the finest of the folk Masses, Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez is a setting of the Mass sung in Spanish. It incorporates folk music from various Latin American cultures, including Argentina and Bolivia, and requires the use of authentic musical instruments. This evening will see the UK debut of the international tenor, Javier Rodriguez, who has been nominated by Ariel Ramirez as his preferred voice for the Misa Criolla. BCS is delighted to have been able to divert Javier and his fellow musicians at the start of their latest European tour for this concert.
Californian composer Morten Lauridsen’s five-movement work Lux Aeterna (1997) for chorus and orchestra is widely appreciated in the United States, with numerous performances, recordings and radio broadcasts. Only recently has it become popular on classical UK radio stations. Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast was composed by an Anglo-African, Samuel Coleridge Taylor, and is based on the classic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Both Sullivan and Elgar took time out to hear this young man’s new work in 1898, which was played hundreds of times in next decade or so.
Two very popular orchestral pieces, Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, round off this offering of music from the North and the South of the American continent.
