No bin collections until after Christmas due to treacherous roads
Refuse collections have been cancelled until after Christmas as it is not safe to get lorries out, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has announced. The council’s refuse collection contractor Veolia was keen to start to catch up today (Thursday 24 December) after some collections had to be cancelled on Monday and all collections had to be cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday, owing to the snow. But the icy roads are too treacherous to be able to get the lorries out to all households. Therefore it is not possible to catch up on the collections missed this week. As the refuse collections were already cancelled over Christmas, the next collections are scheduled for Monday 28 December, as advertised, dependant on weather conditions. Chief Executive Tony Curtis said: “We apologise to residents who, owing to the adverse weather conditions, will be left with extra refuse over Christmas. I hope they will understand that we do not want to put pedestrians, road users and the refuse collection crews at risk by sending them out with icy conditions continuing on many minor roads in the borough. To avoid any confusion, we are therefore sticking to the published collection dates for Christmas and the New Year rather than attempting to catch up on this week’s missed collections. We are appealing to residents not to leave their bins out until the published Christmas period collection date and to take care not to block footpaths or access points.” Over the Christmas and New Year period bin collections are scheduled as follows: If your bin (grey or green) would have been emptied on: put it out instead on: Friday 25 December Monday 28 December Monday 28 December Tuesday 29 December Tuesday 29 December Wednesday 30 December Wednesday 30 December Thursday 31 December Thursday 31 December Saturday 2 January Friday 1 January Monday 4 January Monday 4 January Tuesday 5 January Tuesday 5 January Wednesday 6 January Wednesday 6 January Thursday 7 January Thursday 7 January Friday 8 January Friday 8 January Saturday 9 January Normal collections will resume on Monday 11 January.
