Next step for shopping centre refurbishment

Next step for shopping centre refurbishment The refurbishment of The Malls shopping centre came a step closer this week when Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council submitted its planning application to transform the centre.

The plans for a completely new look include a roof canopy that protects the centre from bad weather but doesn’t enclose it, allowing natural light and air to circulate, demolishing the existing ‘overhangs’ and the creation of new public toilets and improved lift access.

The transformation is continued through the centre and outside on to Alencon Link, where architects have created a landmark gateway entrance to give a better first impression and sense of arrival for visitors to the town centre.

The new-look and designs for The Malls have been developed as a direct result of feedback with residents, visitors and shoppers, following two public exhibitions which the council hosted at the end of last year and this summer.

Cabinet Member for Finance and Property Cllr James Lewin said: “The council is committed to upgrading The Malls. It’s part of our long term vision and plans for enhancing and revitalising the town centre.”

“Even in the current climate it is important that we still continue with our plans so that Basingstoke is in the best possible position to attract inward investment and jobs when the economic recovery eventually arrives.”

The Malls’ proposals are part of the council’s ‘master plan’ called the Central Area Vision, to ensure the future vitality and viability of all parts of the town centre.

A decision on the planning application is expected early in the New Year. After which the project team will tender the work with the aim of starting refurbishment in spring 2010.
