Lets waste less this National Recycle Week

Lets waste less this National Recycle Week People in Basingstoke and Deane are being encouraged to waste less and recycle more this Recycle Week from 22 to 28 June.

In support of the national campaign, which is now in its fifth year, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s recycling team will be visiting key locations around Basingstoke.

This year’s theme is ‘Let’s Waste Less’ and that’s exactly what residents in the borough will be urged to do during roadshows held every day. Officers will be on hand to assist with top tips and advice on waste reduction, recycling, composting and your collection services. A prize-draw with a recycling-themed prize, plus other goodies, will also be available to win at each location.

The recycling roadshow tour will kick off at the Civic Offices on Monday 22 June from 12noon to 4pm, it will then move to Asda at Brighton Hill on Tuesday (10am to 4pm) where Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change Cllr Elaine Still will join the team for the day.

On Wednesday the roadshow will be visiting Sainsbury’s at Hatch Warren (10am to 4pm) where shoppers will be able to learn more about the work of the council’s environmental enforcement team which includes reducing litter and fly tipping.

Basingstoke train station forecourt will host the roadshow’s plastic bag amnesty on Thursday 25 June from 2pm to 7pm. People will be encouraged to hand in their plastic bags in return for a reusable shopping bag, courtesy of Veolia Environmental Services - the borough council’s waste and recycling collection contractor.

Chineham shopping centre will stage Friday’s recycling roadshow from 10am to 4pm where Deborah Gillman, Waste Reduction Advisor from WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), will be available to answer your questions. And the tour will conclude at Festival Place on Saturday between 10am to 4pm when shoppers can take a few minutes out to learn more about how they can do their bit for the environment.

Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change Cllr Elaine Still said: “This is the fifth year Recycle Week has been held and every year our efforts to support the national campaign get bigger and better. This year the theme aims to encourage people to go greener and cut back on the waste we all produce.

“We will be supporting Recycle Week with six roadshows, which will see our recycling team offer help and advice on what can and can’t be recycled, where to take items such as glass or old clothes and how to reduce food waste by composting and using digesters. We’re taking the opportunity to go out and explain to people just how easy and effortless it is to recycle.”
