Julie Rose, of Everest Community College, in Basingstoke, won the South East Regional title for The Royal Air Force Award for Head Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School at the 2009 Teaching Awards for the South of England and will now be entered for a national award.

BBC TV presenter Sally Taylor hosted the awards ceremony at Winchester Guildhall

Julie Rose was among 11 winners from the South of England to be recognised at the ceremony, hosted by BBC TV presenter Sally Taylor, at Winchester Guildhall on Wednesday June 3, cheered on by a 250 strong audience, including pupils, parents and colleagues.

The Hampshire representative faced tough competition from teaching staff from Southampton, Portsmouth, Oxfordshire, Dorset, Buckinghamshire,

Hampshire winner will go forward to the national finals

The Hampshire winner will be joined by winners from other parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland who will now go forward to the national finals on Sunday October 25 at the Theatre Royal, in Drury Lane, London. The celebration will be broadcast later that day on BBC Radio 2.

The annual Teaching Awards recognise excellence in education and nominations were submitted by parents, pupils, former parents and colleagues and assessed by independent awards panels. The awards are now in their eleventh year and have already recognised the achievements of over 1,000 teachers, headteachers and teaching assistants from across the country.

Congratulating the winners, Hampshire County Council’s Director of Children’s Services, John Coughlan, said:

“Congratulations to all those who reached the regional finals of the Teaching Awards. Well done to Julie, Mark and Ringwood School who are now going forward to the national finals in October. Their success is a testament to the fantastic wealth of experience and talent that exists in Hampshire’s schools. I wish them all the very best of luck for the finals in London later this year.”
