Hampshire recyclers say yes to Yellow Pages
Hampshire residents will soon be able to recycle more materials in their kerbside bin or bag, with the acceptance of Yellow Pages telephone directories for the first time. Historically, Yellow Pages directories could not be placed in kerbside recycling bins for a number of reasons, but Hampshire County Council, along with its waste disposal contractor Veolia Environmental Services, is pleased to announce that these hurdles have been overcome, meaning that Yellow Pages can now be recycled at home by all householders. Most households in Hampshire receive a new Yellow Pages directory every year. It is hoped that by now accepting them in kerbside collections, as well as in paper banks around the county, it will make recycling them easy, and will result in many copies of Yellow Pages being recycled across Hampshire, further improving our recycling performance. Householders can start recycling Yellow Pages in their kerbside bin or bags from 1 April 2009, although most new directories are not scheduled to be delivered to Hampshire households until later in the summer. Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Mel Kendal said: “This is excellent news for Hampshire’s householders who want to recycle a greater range of materials through their kerbside collections. By collecting Yellow Pages in both recycling bins and bring banks around the county we will also be contributing to Hampshire’s already impressive recycling rate of 40%”. 1. Kerbside collections are organised by district councils. Hampshire County Council is the designated Waste Disposal Authority with responsibility for recycling or disposing of the household rubbish once collected. 2.All Hampshire district authorities collect the same materials in their kerbside recycling bins or bags: * newspapers, magazines, and other mixed paper cardboard *food tins and drinks cans * plastic bottles. 3.It is important that the right items are collected for recycling to ensure that Hampshire supplies good quality materials to our reprocessors, so householders should ensure they put the right things in their bin or bag. 4.
