New police officer in charge of policing

New police officer in charge of policing Residents in Basingstoke and Deane have a new officer in charge of policing the district as Chief Inspector Cliff Williams takes over the role of District Commander.

Ch Insp Williams who replaces Ch Insp Jill Baldry is already familiar with the area as he has served at Basingstoke as both an Inspector and as a Sergeant.

With 21 years of policing experience, Ch Insp Williams is bringing a wealth of knowledge to the role having served in Andover, Basingstoke, Romsey, Eastleigh and Portsmouth.

He has also spent time on secondment to national police training and his most recent post has been at the force headquarters heading up the community safety department.

In this role, Ch Insp Williams was the force’s Safer Streets lead, launching campaigns around alcohol harm reduction, underage drinking and crime and disorder.

Ch Insp Williams was the force lead for the knife crime reduction campaign and led the amnesty which saw more knives removed from the streets of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight than in any other force area in the country.

He has been involved in developing partnership work across the constabulary, was the force representative on the Wessex Youth Offending Team Management Board and the force lead for the Special Constabulary.

Ch Insp Williams said: “I plan to build on the strong and successful partnership work that my predecessor has been engaged in.

“It is clear that our policing teams have the support of the community and do their upmost to deliver a quality service, often in difficult circumstances.

“However, we cannot do this alone and in order to continue this success we need the support of the public and our partners to ensure Basingstoke remains a safe place to live.

“The development of our Safer Neighbourhoods Teams has been crucial in working with communities to resolve ongoing issues of crime and disorder.

“We will also continue to make Basingstoke and Deane a hostile environment for anyone considering coming to the area to commit crime.”

North and East Operational Command Unit Commander, Chief Superintendent Mark Chatterton said: “We are delighted that Ch Insp Williams has taken over as District Commander of Basingstoke and Deane and I am confident he will continue to deliver an excellent level of policing service for all communities within the district.

“We also wish Superintendent Baldry all the best in her new role and thank her for her dedication and commitment over the past three years.”
