Detectives appeal for witnesses after distraction burglary

Detectives appeal for witnesses after distraction burglaryDetectives in Basingstoke are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in the town on Thursday, May 22.

Sometime between 10am and 10.45am a man gained entry to the home of an elderly woman in Winchester Road claiming to be there to check the water.

Once inside he stole £90 in cash from her handbag and then left.

The man is described as:
  • White
  • 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins
  • 30 to 36 years old
  • Irish accent
  • Short black hair
  • Clean shaven
  • Wearing grey trousers and a light shirt
Detective Constable John Hood, of Basingstoke CID, said: “This was a serious incident and we would like to hear from anyone who has any information about it.

“We would remind residents to always check the identity of visitors and workmen before granting them access to their homes.”

Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Homes advice:
  • Stop – are you expecting anyone to call on you?  Do you know the person at the door?  Don’t be misled by what appear to be genuine reasons for calling on you.
  • Chain – fit a door chain or spy hole so that you can speak to callers or check who they are without opening the door fully.
  • Check – A genuine caller will carry identification and will be happy to wait outside while you check it.  Remember to source your own number for the company they are claiming to be from.

Burglars can make you believe they are genuine callers.
Don't invite them in.  If in doubt, keep them out!

Can you help?
Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Hood at Basingstoke CID on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Mini-Com users can call 01962 875000.
